Shutter Systems, Inc. recommends the use of
high quality hinge hardware in excess of 1/8"
(.125" gauge). Historic or decorative hinges and
should be used with caution. We recommend
using heavy gate hinges for the best protection.
Use two hinges on shutters less than six square
feet and three hinges per panel on shutters over
six square feet. Hinges must be securely
fastened to the window frame with well-anchored
three-inch screws. If mounting to brick or
masonry, FEMA recommends using plastic or
vibration resistant anchors with six-inch long
screws. Anchor all hardware with ¼" galvanized
carriage bolts running thought both the Hurricane
Panel and shutter.
Several types of bolt latches can be used to lock
the shutters closed during severe weather
conditions. Latches can be a long throw barrel
lock (6 inch throw or longer) or they can be as
simple as pipe clamps over a one inch metal
galvanized water pipe. If the pipe lock is used,
just slide the pipe in position and secure with
Carter keys as needed. Again, if historic or
decorative hinges and bolt latches are used,
strength requirements should be considered and
therefore used with caution. Shutter hold back
latches or 'dogs' vary widely and can be selected
based on the customer's taste and budget.
Designer 'dogs' or a mere brass screen door
latch will work equally well, depending on budget.

Shutter Systems can provide Hurricane Panels in various standard sizes and special ordered
panels for difficult to fit shutters. The panels can be cut with a standard carbide-tipped saw blade
or router.
The Hurricane Panel will be mounted on the back of a standard wooden exterior shutter panel. A
continuous bead of high quality silicone caulk (35 year) should be placed around the top and
sides of the wooden shutter frame to repel moisture. Along the bottom of the shutter, allow
several quarter inch 'weep' holes for the drainage of any condensation trapped between the
shutter and Hurricane panel. Along the inside of the caulk bead, and on the bottom of the shutter
frame, place a bead of quality exterior epoxy glue, again leaving 'weep' holes open in the bottom.
Attach the Hurricane Panel only to the casing or frame of the wooden shutter. Drill all attaching
screw holes in the Hurricane Panel slightly oversized to allow expansion and contraction of the
shutter frame. Attach one-inch screws through the Hurricane and into the shutter framing every 8
- 10 inches to insure good, long term adhesion. Paints that adhere well to Hurricane
Panel are acrylic enamels or acrylic urethanes. Your local paint supplier can recommend the
best product for your area.
